On Friday 7 August 2026, Luxembourg’s Environment Administration reported that its Chemicals Unit recently carried out a series of inspections to verify whether hazardous chemical mixtures marketed in Luxembourg had been properly notified to the Poison Centre.
According to the administration, the inspections, undertaken across 2025 to 2026 to verify whether hazardous chemical mixtures marketed in Luxembourg had been properly notified to the Poison Centre, revealed that around one in five products had not been notified, demonstrating the need to raise awareness among both manufacturers and users of these products.
The administration reported that some of the inspections were carried out as part of a project coordinated by the Forum of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), in which nineteen EU Member States participated.
The results of this European project showed that approximately 19% of the products inspected had not been notified to the Poison Centre. In Luxembourg, 64 hazardous chemical mixtures, including household chemicals and biocidal products, were inspected. The inspections revealed that thirteen products had not been notified at all, while eight others had incomplete or incorrect notifications.
The administration stated that in every case where non-compliance was identified, the Environment Administration required corrective measures to be implemented. The vast majority of the manufacturers concerned have since brought their products into compliance. The few products for which the situation has still not been regularised may no longer be placed on the Luxembourg market.
The Brussels Poison Centre is the reference service for the management of poisoning cases in Luxembourg. To provide citizens, healthcare professionals and emergency services with rapid and appropriate advice, it is essential that the centre has accurate information on the composition of the chemical mixtures concerned. This information is only available if products have been notified before being placed on the market.
For several years, all hazardous chemical mixtures have been required to carry a UFI (Unique Formula Identifier) code on their label. This unique code enables the Poison Centre to identify the product immediately and provide the appropriate medical recommendations in the event of poisoning.
The administration advised that if in the event of a poisoning where the situation is life-threatening (loss of consciousness, respiratory distress, convulsions, etc.), or in the event of carbon monoxide poisoning, one should immediately call the emergency services on its 112 contact number.
For any poisoning involving a chemical product, medicine or plant, it is recommended that one contact the Poison Centre without delay and provide either the product label or its UFI code. The Poison Centre can be contacted via tel. 8002 5500.
