On Friday 1 August 2025, the Grand Ducal Police and the Federal Police of Koblenz released a joint statement regarding updates to the Schengen Internal border controls currently in place on the A8 (BAB 8) motorway.
According to the statement, through coordination between the Ministers of the Interior of Luxembourg and the Federal Republic of Germany, the Grand Ducal Police of Luxembourg and the Federal Police Directorate of Koblenz have agreed on a joint operational procedure, which aims to reduce the impact on traffic flow, while continuing efforts to combat cross-border crime.
The changes, which come into effect on Friday 1 August 2025, will see the removal of the current single-lane traffic restrictions and the speed limit of 20 km/h caused by the border controls.
In relation to the existing traffic restrictions in the area of the Moselle bridge near Schengen, Schengen internal border controls will continue to be carried out on German territory, directly behind the border bridge. The responsible police authorities in Luxembourg and Germany have agreed, within the framework of bilateral arrangements, on a temporary operational procedure that enables the Federal Police to identify vehicles relevant for inspection at an early stage on Luxembourg territory and to carry out checks off the A8 on German soil. Authorities will direct selected vehicles from the flowing traffic to the designated checkpoint at the Moseltal rest area.
The authorities noted that this temporary alternative procedure applies exclusively to the Federal Police controls on the A8 motorway and does not affect the other responsibilities and powers of the Federal Police in the context of the temporarily reinstated internal border controls. This procedure does not affect how authorities return individuals who are refused entry into Germany.
