On Wednesday 13 September 2023, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, presented the timeline of the future multimodal corridor and the rapid tram running between Cloche d'Or in Luxembourg-Gasperich and Esch-Belval.

Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works noted that these projects, which are worth around €3 billion, will serve the country's two major economic centres - the South region and the City of Luxembourg - and aim to promote the economic and social development of the Grand Duchy. The rapid tram will connect Belval, the northern districts of Esch-sur-Alzette and the new Metzeschmelz district to Luxembourg City and Luxembourg Airport.

On Wednesday, Minister Bausch presented the timeline for implementing these projects to the mayors of the municipalities of Sanem, Esch-sur-Alzette, Mondercange, Schifflange, Leudelange and the City of Luxembourg.

The rapid tram is planned to run from 2028 between Cloche d'Or and Leudelange, from 2030 to Foetz, in 2032 to Metzeschmelz in Esch-sur-Alzette and in 2035 to Belval.

The project includes: thirteen new tram stations; 17.5 km of route including 10 km between the Leudelange and Foetz stops at a speed of more than 70km/h; five new exchange hubs; one new wildlife crossing. 20 related road projects will focus on the optimisation of motorways, creating a third lane for carpooling and buses on the A4 motorway, adaptations of motorway interchanges, street calming in adjacent localities, setting up an express cycle path and creating cycle routes connecting localities to this express cycle path.

"Such a flagship multimodal project will require close consultation between the municipalities concerned. This first stone was laid today by the creation of a political committee by the municipalities concerned and the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works in order to be able to carry out the project as quickly as possible and finally to put in place a stable political framework,” stated Minister Bausch.

A photographic exhibition was also launched in Esch-Belval on Wednesday. A series of about 30 photographs taken by photographer Philippe Gasser will be exhibited on the blast furnace terrace, as well as in the Belval Plaza shopping centre, showing the future route of the rapid tram and the multimodal corridor at present from the point of view of the landscape and its daily users.
