The inauguration of the first "Kempower" ultra-fast "SuperChargy" electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Pontpierre took place on Tuesday 27 June 2023, in the presence of Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, the Minister for Energy and Spatial Planning, Claude Turmes, and the Head of Asset Management at Creos Luxembourg, Alex Michels.

About a year after the inauguration of the first SuperChargy EV charging stations on Luxembourg's motorway network, the symbolic commissioning of the SuperChargy station at the Pontpierre service area along the A4 motorway (in the direction of Esch-sur-Alzette) marks both the continued densification of the network and the integration of new-generation ultra-fast charging stations.

Deputy Prime Minister Bausch explained during the inauguration: "With more than 3,000 charging points accessible to the public for a total fleet of more than 30,000 registered electric cars, the Grand Duchy continues to have one of the densest charging networks in the European Union. It is crucial that the number of charging stations continues to increase in the same order of magnitude as the number of electric vehicles. [...] Ultra-fast charging stations, like this one at the Pontpierre rest area, are crucial for long-distance travel across Europe in a 100% electric car."

Note that a total of 90 ultra-fast charging stations will be spread over eighteen stations and service areas on the motorways and other main axes of the Grand Duchy until 2024. The next service areas to benefit from additional fast charging stations in 2023 are those in Wasserbillig, Hosingen, Schwebach-Pont, Micheville, Lorentzweiler and Remich.

According to Minister Turmes, "the commissioning of these SuperChargy ultra-fast charging stations in Pontpierre is an important step towards densification of the charging infrastructure throughout the national territory. I am particularly pleased that all public terminals in Luxembourg are supplied with 100% green electricity. Thus, the rise of electromobility not only helps us to get out of our dependence on foreign fossil fuels, but also to fight against climate change by moving us towards low CO2 emissions mobility."

The relevant ministries noted that due to supply chain delays, they had to find a new kiosk supplier. With the arrival of Kempower, the deployment on the strategic axes can continue as planned. In addition, and in order to further secure the supply, network manager Creos will replace some of the terminals already installed in several service areas with these new terminals.

The new Kempower terminals are of the latest generation. According to the ministries, they feature a longer and more manageable charging cable, a maximum power of 400 kW for each charging point, an interface with a QR code illustrating the charging curve in real time on the user's mobile phone and use less floor area.

Alex Michels commented: "For Creos, the deployment of charging stations is an important element of the energy transition; being able to charge electric cars during the day with electricity from photovoltaic production helps to secure our electricity network today and in the future."
