On Wednesday 18 May 2022, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, the Minister of Energy, Claude Turmes, and the Minister of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development, Joëlle Welfring, together with about fifty private and public actors, signed the charter of commitment of the electromobility initiative “Stroum Beweegt – Elektresch an d'Zukunft”.

The collective approach aims to support and advance the development of the electromobility market in Luxembourg and to overcome existing obstacles.

The charter signing event was accompanied by two reflection workshops on the development of the charging infrastructure and on the management of the company vehicle fleet. Several initiatives were presented to support the development of electromobility.

With 'Stroum beweegt – Elektresch an d’Zukunft', we bring together the actors of the country who work on the concrete implementation of electromobility in all its facets. Apart from the steps of the State, we need more than ever private initiatives which contribute to facilitating the transition to the mobility of the future”, said Minister Turmes.

“Stroum beweegt – Elektresch an d’Zukunft” - Facilitating the transition to the mobility of the future

The “Stroum beweegt – Elektresch an d’Zukunft” initiative is divided into two levels:

  • Labeling of actors: signature of a charter, presentation of a concrete measure / project, and commitment to support the development of the electromobility market;
  • Platform for exchange between the actors involved: organisation of working meetings with the aim of advancing electromobility in Luxembourg.

As of 16 May 2022, 51 actors from the professional world adhere to the "Stroum beweegt" label: automotive and accessories market, bus companies, public actors, energy suppliers and research centres; thus they demonstrate their responsibility and their exemplary commitment.

Measures and projects include, for example, the electrification of public transport, the creation of charging facilities in residential and non-residential buildings, the establishment of a national fast-charging network for electric vehicles, training and the targeted qualification of specialised personnel, regulatory adjustments or even the rapid development of the vehicle market.

The platform for the exchange between actors and the implementation of joint activities aims to exploit synergies. First exchanges at platform level have already taken place in June 2021 and January 2022.

With the 'Klimabonus Mobilitéit' financial aid scheme, which we have just renewed for two additional years, we want to encourage and accelerate the transition to mobility with zero greenhouse gas emissions. The gradual shift to electromobility is an unmissable opportunity to promote shared mobility concepts, which will be an important link in our intermodal transport systems in the future. Our quality of life will come out a winner”, emphasised Minister Welfring.

Registrations – Electrification is gaining momentum

In addition, the number of electric cars is increasing more and more with 20.5% of new registrations in 2021 and 23.7% for the first four months of 2022. The initiative "Stroum beweegt – Elektresch an d'Zukunft" aims to accelerate this development.

More and more electric vehicles are registered across Europe, including in Luxembourg in particular, and thus contribute to the decarbonisation of the transport sector. On the other hand, this growing success also implies that the infrastructures and services for these vehicles must also increase in the same order of magnitude. Thus, the initiative 'Stroum beweegt – Elektresch an d'Zukunft' is a crucial platform in order to bring together all the national actors in the field of electromobility and to discuss the challenges and opportunities", specified Minister Bausch.

The national network of charging stations – One of the most efficient charging networks in Europe

The national network of Chargy charging stations includes more than 1,000 charging points and several ultra-fast charging stations. Each month, more than 500,000 kWh of green electricity are charged, which corresponds to approximately three million kilometres traveled per month by electric vehicles. It is planned to install more Chargy charging points and 88 SuperChargy terminals in the coming months, offering ultra-fast charging of electric vehicles. Currently, in Luxembourg, not only households, but also all Chargy public charging stations are supplied with 100% renewable green electricity.
