On Thursday 6 February 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister of Health and Social Security, Martine Deprez, together with Secretary General of the Luxembourg Association of Physicians and Dentists (AMMD), Dr Sébastien Diederich, held a press conference for the launch of the "I love my Hausdokter" (I love my General Practitioner) campaign, at the Ministry of Health and Social Security’s premises in Luxembourg-Gasperich.

This initiative aims to promote the importance of primary care in Luxembourg and to encourage members of the public to consult their general practitioner (GP) or paediatrician for non-urgent care. The initiative also asks citizens to attend hospital accident and emergency (A&E) departments only when necessary.

Minister Deprez outlined the aims of the campaign and thanked those involved. She added that promotional posters will be made available, in various languages, with the objective of educating members of the public to avail of GP services. Minister Deprez highlighted the many facets of primary care, where the GP knows the patient, resulting in a more personalised service and follow-up. The GP will subsequently refer a patient to the appropriate follow-on service when required.

Dr Diederich then spoke of the campaign from a medical point of view. He emphasised that the GP should be the first port of call in non-emergency care. He reiterated Minister Deprez’s reference to the important role of GPs, from cradle to grave, in ensuring continuity of care, as well as referring patients onwards as required. He also encouraged the public to refrain from attending A&E, except in an emergency situation, thereby reducing the pressure on hospital services.

Speaking to Chronicle.lu, Minister Deprez stated that GP access was available to all. She clarified that this was a free service for children and that the government funded 80% of the cost for adults. She also encouraged all members of the public to register with a GP.
