Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security has announced the launch of a new phase of the organised colorectal (bowel) cancer screening programme.

As part of ongoing efforts to improve public health, the Health Directorate is launching a new phase of this organised screening programme, which is run jointly with the National Health Fund (CNS). This programme, intended for Luxembourg residents and non-residents affiliated to the CNS, aged 45 to 74, introduces several improvements to facilitate access to screening and encourage wider participation, according to the authorities.

New key measures from Monday 2 September 2024 include:

- the new reference laboratory for the screening programme is the Bionext laboratory, selected following a public procurement procedure. Screening invitations sent before Sunday 1 September 2024 still indicate Laboratoires Réunis as the reference laboratory, but remain valid for this new phase of the programme;

- beneficiaries of the programme will now be able to collect screening kits containing the fecal immunochemical test (FIT) in pharmacies and at Bionext laboratory sampling centres, upon presentation of their invitation. The kits are available in French and German from 2 September and in Luxembourgish, Portuguese and English from 10 September 2024. Beneficiaries will also be able to benefit from advice and support from the Bionext laboratory and pharmacists for carrying out the test;

- people who have already been screened through the programme will now automatically receive a new screening kit with their invitation, without prior order.
