As of the first week of September 2021, Luxembourg had reached the 70% mark for fully vaccinated members of the eligible population (aged 12 years or older).
It is therefore possible to check the effect of vaccination in the general population with regard to the new infections contracted and hospitalisations required. One of the primary incentives to get vaccinated early on in the pandemic was to reduce the number of people with severe disease and in need of medical care.
The data for the past ten weeks (30 August to 7 November 2021) show that unvaccinated or partly vaccinated people are more likely to get infected (PCR confirmed tests) in comparison to fully vaccinated people. As more than 70% of the eligible resident population is fully vaccinated, the data in terms of 100,000 residents in each group offers a better representation (own calculations), which show significantly fewer vaccinated people were infected over the last ten weeks.

Similarly, the hospitalisation data available for last five weeks show fully vaccinated individuals were less frequently hospitalised due to COVID-19 than unvaccinated or partly vaccinated individuals.
