On Sunday morning, Luxembourg Air Rescue (LAR) flew an emergency physician from Luxembourg to Portugal to support the fight against COVID-19.
Given the particularly overwhelming situation in various Portuguese hospitals, triggered by the COVID-19 health crisis, LAR sent an emergency physician specialising in anesthesia and resuscitation to Lisbon. This was done in collaboration with the High Commission for National Protection (Haut-commissariat à la Protection nationale - HCPN), Luxembourg's Ministry of State, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs and the Ministry of Health.
Just two days after the Portuguese government accepted Luxembourg's offer of help in the joint fight against COVID-19, LAR's emergency physician flew to Lisbon, accompanied by a graduate nurse and teacher at Lycée Technique pour Professions de Santé (LTPS). LAR reported that the medical team has already started working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Espírito Santo d´Évora hospital in the Alentejo region.
"The crisis has shown us in a ruthless way that we can only fight and win the fight against a pandemic if we lead it together", noted René Closter, CEO and President of LAR. "It is therefore evident that LAR, with its more than 30 years of experience in the field of cross-border aid, is committed to doing everything possible to help the most affected countries like Portugal".
