In response to a parliamentary question, Luxembourg's Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and Minister of Health Paulette Lenert confirmed that over 1,200 healthcare workers have received the first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to date.

Earlier this week, Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) asked the government for more details about Luxembourg's COVID-19 vaccination strategy.

In a joint response, the Prime Minister and Health Minister confirmed that the first batch of 9,700 vaccine doses arrived in Luxembourg on 26 December 2020; this is enough to vaccinate 4,850 people (two doses required).

To date, a total of 1,251 healthcare workers have already received the first dose of the vaccine. Vaccination also began this week for residents of Luxembourg's eleven nursing homes.

The Prime Minister and Health Minister clarified that there were around 29,000 people employed in Luxembourg's healthcare sector.

They added that the government expects to receive enough doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to vaccinate approximately 36,000 people by the end of March 2021.
