The Directorate for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Action from Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has pledged €400,000 to the fight against coronavirus.

To combat the spread of coronavirus, and in particular to protect states with less resilient health systems, the World Health Organization (WHO) has launched a preparedness and response plan worth €620 million for the period from February to April 2020.

In the spirit of solidarity, Luxembourg's Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Franz Fayot, has decided to allocate €200,000 from Luxembourg Cooperation to this plan for the containment of coronavirus. The plan defines the activities and resources needed by international health organisations to strengthen the preparedness and response capacity of countries. Its objective is to limit the spread of the virus, particularly in the most vulnerable countries in the event of an epidemic, to isolate and care for patients, to communicate adequately about the risks and thus to minimise the impact socioeconomic.

Luxembourg will also provide up to €200,000 to the WHO Emergency Reserve Fund, a fund which was created four years ago to give WHO the means to respond to epidemic outbreaks worldwide and which is therefore particularly requested at this time to support the overall health response to COVID-19.

Furthermore, within the framework of its bilateral relations, the Luxembourg government will dispatch emergency aid in the form of protective equipment to China, the most severely affected country so far.
