The Luxembourg Cabinet today approved the appointment of Prof. Dr. Evelin Schröck as the new Chair of the Board of Directors of the Laboratoire national de santé (LNS); Dr. Schröck will take over the reins of the LNS from 1 December 2019.

A specialist in human genetics, Dr. Schröck currently directs the Institute of Clinical Genetics at the Carl Gustav Carus University Hospital of the Technical University Dresden in Germany.

After initial training in medicine and genetics at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Dr. Schröck gained complementary skills in biomedical research at the University of Heidelberg, then at the renowned National Institute of Health in Bethesda near Washington in the USA. Upon her return to Europe, she joined the Technical University of Dresden as a professor of clinical genetics. At the head of the Institute of Clinical Genetics since 2003, she has a deep mastery of different aspects of diagnosis and genetic counseling, as well as oncology and management.

Dr. Schröck is a member of several European and international scientific associations and continues to lead a research group in genetics. She is part of the management of the Dresden partner site of the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) in Heidelberg, where doctors and scientists work hand-in-hand to provide cancer patients with personalised diagnosis and therapy. Recently awarded the prestigious title of "Max-Planck-Fellow", reserved to about 60 exceptional researchers in Germany, she participates in research activities at home and at the international level.

As a member of the Board of Directors of the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) from 2014 to 2019, Dr. Schröck learned a lot about Luxembourg well, including its biomedical context and administrative environment. Her many experiences in clinical genetics, biomedical research, laboratory diagnosis and management make her an ideal candidate to chair the LNS Board.

The LNS is a public institution created by the law of 7 August 2012 and operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Health in Luxembourg. It is organised as a multidisciplinary institute which includes, alongside an administrative department, four scientific departments in the fields of medical biology, microbiology, forensic medicine and health protection in addition to hosting the National Center of Pathology and the National Center of Genetics.
