A 0.2% drop in the Luxembourg unemployment rate for January 2016 to 6.5% has seen the largest annual decline in available job seekers registered with ADEM since March 2008.
As of 31 January 2016, the number of ADEM job seekers stood at 18,368, having fallen by 1,100 people, or 5.7%, from the same date of the previous year. From December 2015 to January 2016, the unemployment rate dropped from 6.7% to 6.5%.
The number of people that registered with ADEM in this month of this year was also lower, by 4.1%, than that for 2015, and the number of individuals receiving full unemployment benefits amounted to 7,427, indicating 325 people less than on 31 January 2015.
In January 2016, 2,907 vacancies were made available to ADEM, demonstrating an increase of 5.1% compared to the same month of the previous year, whilst 181 more people received an employment measure in January 2015 than in the same month of 2015.
The under-30 demographic saw the biggest decrease in ADEM registrations over the year, with a drop of 9.8% to 4,091, whilst those aged 50 and over continued to constitute the largest demographic signed with ADEM and saw the smallest annual decrease of 1.2%. With this in mind, two new measures were introduced in the first month of 2016 with the aim of facilitating the return to employment of the most vulnerable, including older job seekers and those with health issues. The measures involve a professionalisation internship and a re-employment contract, the latter of which 11 people benefitted from at last count on 31 January 2016. The professionalisation courses were only registered for in February 2016.
