The Luxembourg Institute for Regulation (ILR) has reported that that Luxembourg is one of the best providers in Europe with regard to fixed and mobile infrastructures for internet access.
According to a study published on 21 September 2017 by the European Commission, Luxembourg continues to be one of the best European providers of fixed and mobile internet cover. According to the study, nearly 90% of households have access to very high-speed Internet, via VDSL technologies. This very high-speed access can offer residents of the Grand Duchy speeds of 30 to 100 Mbps.
This widely implemented technology is based on extending fibre optics to street distributors and connecting to the home in classic copper pair. For more than 70 years, more than 70% of households have chosen a high-performance cable TV infrastructure capable of delivering speeds above 100Mbps.
The current optical fibre coverage places Luxembourg at the top among its neighbouring countries. Availability for the majority of households is among the most advanced in Europe and the Grand Duchy is well above the European average in terms of fibre optic coverage. This infrastructure is largely set up by the Post and Telecommunications Company with its services being sold by Post Telecom, Tango, Luxembourg Online and Orange.
Indeed, in 12 months, fibre optic coverage increased by 4.4 points, or about 10,000 additional households that have access to fibre optics.
