In 2017, Luxembourg's Accident Insurance Association (AAA) reinforced its communication actions and to make a facelift by changing its visual identity, with a new logo and new website launched in March 2018.

It is in this context of modernisation and improvement that the AAA has presented its first annual report summarising the activities of 2017. The purpose of this 98-page document, rich in images and graphics, is to give a overview of the operation, missions, activities, key data and financial results of the AAA to all stakeholders, be they the social partners, the heads of other administrations, policy makers in the wider term or just the external audience interested.

In 2011, the AAA had implemented a major reform, with the primary objective of ensuring fair compensation for insured persons by providing benefits similar to those of ordinary law, while maintaining financial equilibrium. The retrospective analysis shows that this goal is now achieved and that the AAA has achieved excellent results financially. Compared with 2016, expenses increased only slightly (2.8%). On the other hand, receipts from employer and non-employee insured contributions grew more strongly (7%). The single contribution rate for 2016 of 1.00% of the payroll has thus been maintained and is at a historically low level.

The section "Statistics and key figures" summarises the evolution of activities. A few key figures from 2017 concerning the general scheme (which covers all persons who have a professional activity in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg): 15,780 recognised occupational accidents, 3,638 recognised travel accidents, 99 recognised occupational diseases, i.e. 19,517 total number of accidents, of which 21 were fatal. The AAA receives an average of 100 reports per day. Luxembourg has 30,665 enterprises and 406,129 workers.

It can also be noted that the number of recognised accidents has remained stable, despite the significant increase in the active population in recent years. Yet it is clear that even though the accident frequency rate is at its lowest level, the number of work-related deaths remains high.

Thus, to strengthen workplace safety and health culture and further reduce the number and severity of work-related accidents and occupational diseases, the AAA, in collaboration with the social and state partners, started in 2016 a national strategy, called VISION ZERO: it is based on the assumption that "zero deaths and zero serious injuries" is possible only by involving all stakeholders. It is in this context that a major media campaign was launched by the "Prevention" service in 2017 in close collaboration with the newly created "Communication" service.

In 2017, the AAA also gave a new impetus to the fight against abuse and fraud. 22 cases were under investigation by a judge in 2017.

The annual report is available online at www.aaa.lu and a printed version can be ordered by e-mail: communication.aaa@secu.lu. Note that the AAA can also be followed on social media LinkedIn and Twitter, and on Facebook and YouTube under "VISION ZERO".
