Ahead of the Luxembourg government's expected announcement of new COVID-19 restrictions, the LCGB trade union has warned that a second lockdown could be the "death blow" for employees in vulnerable sectors.

The LCGB stressed that the extent of the current alarming situation requires a responsibility and a united effort from everyone to respect these measures. Despite recognising the importance of guaranteeing the proper operational functioning of the medical system, the union warned that "cohesion and social protection within the Grand Duchy cannot be neglected".

The LCGB emphasised that employees are not responsible for the health crisis and that "their lives should in no way fall victim to [its] economic and social repercussions". The union added that the "lessons learned in spring must absolutely be applied today".

Consequently, the LCGB has urged the government to organise the next national tripartite before the end of the year, to allow all parties the chance to discuss the necessary measures to avoid a wave of bankruptcies in the sectors worst hit by the second lockdown, as well as an extension of the partial unemployment scheme. The union drew particular attention to the hospitality and events sectors, which were both significantly impacted by the first lockdown in March and subsequently "weakened by uncertain and turbulent times".
