The Grand Ducal Police yesterday reported that Luxembourg is currently under attack from malicious software entitled TeslaCrypt.
Infection from this virus is usually caused by an email with an attachment, usually in Zip format. Upon infection, a series of files including text, images and video files become encrypted, not only from the machine but also from files stored on any media connected to the computer such as hard drives or USB keys, as well as all network shares that the machine has access to.
The encryption used was reported to be extremely efficient, with no cracking method currently known. The criminals reponsible are demanding around USD 500 for the provision of the decryption key.
The police advised the public to not open any emails and attachments from unknown senders, and make regular backups of their files, unplugging external media as soon as they are finished using it.
