In the UEFA Nations League C, Group 1, Luxembourg secured a morale-boosting away win in Baku, winning 2-1 away to Azerbaijan, in their first match of the competition.

Playing in the Olympic Stadium, the home side scored first in the last minute of the first half, thanks to a goal by Sheydaev. However, just 5 minutes into the second half, Luxembourg were back on level terms thanks to an own goal by Krivotsyuk. Then, with almost 20 minutes left to play, Luxembourg were awarded a penalty which Rodrigues converted to leave the scores 2-1 for the Red Devils, a lead they hung onto until the final whistle.

Luxembourg were on top for long periods and their patience paid off as their domination eventually wore down the ten men of Azerbaijan (Mahir Emreli received his marching orders on 10 minutes), who had battled bravely and looked set for a shock win at the interval. It was mainly one-way traffic for the most part and but for a combination of the heroics of the Azerbaijani goalkeeper, Balayev, and the woodwork, could have been a more comprehensive score-line for Holtz's side.

Luxembourg had a total of 19 attempts on goal, of which 7 were on target. In addition to Azerbaijan's one red card, they also picked up three yellow cards. Luxembourg did not receive any in a disciplined performance.

In the other League C Group 1 match played on Saturday, Montenegro won 2-0 away to Cyprus.

Luxembourg's next game is at home to Montenegro on Tuesday 8 September 2020 at 20:45.
