Luxembourg film production company Red Lion has announced that Fabrizio Maltese's new film "The Invitation" will have its world premiere at the 24th edition of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, which is taking place in Greece from 10 to 23 March 2022.

Luxembourg-based photographer and documentary filmmaker Fabrizio Maltese co-wrote The Invitation with Stephan Roelants, Producer and CEO at Melusine Productions and Studio 352, based on an original idea by Mauritanian-born Malian film director and producer Abderrahmane Sissako and the late Luxembourgish film director and producer Pol Cruchten.

The feature film will be presented in the "Film Forward" section at the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, a competition of films that question the documentary cinematographic form by emphasising the viewer's relationship with reality.

As its title indicates, the film is an invitation addressed by Abderrahmane Sissako, the director of "Timbuktu", to the attention of Fabrizio Maltese, to come and discover and film his native country, Mauritania. Fabrizio Maltese responds favourably to this invitation and finds himself carried away on an epic and intimate journey.

Supported by Film Fund Luxembourg, the shooting of the film took place in 2020 between Senegal and Mauritania.

The film will be released in theaters in Luxembourg later in 2022.
