Film Fund Luxembourg has reported that two Luxembourg immersive works are headed to this year's Cannes Film Festival.
The Cannes Film Festival has just revealed the eight projects selected for its Immersive Competition which includes collective virtual reality (VR) installations, mixed reality experiences and video mapping and holographic works.
The extended reality (XR) work The Roaming, supported by Film Fund Luxembourg, is part of this competition. This immersive collective VR experience was co-produced in Luxembourg by Wild Fang Films (Hélène Walland and Christian Neuman) together with France and Canada. Film Fund Luxembourg noted that Mathieu Pradat's creation transports participants into a shared virtual environment where they can interact with each other and their surroundings, providing an engaging experience challenging the limits of virtual reality.
All the work on the character movements using motion capture was carried out with Luxembourg actresses Anne Klein and Marianne Bourg. The entire animation part of the project was carried out in the Zeilt Productions studios in Foetz.
The Immersive Competition of the Cannes Film Festival is a new competition dedicated to immersive works, the first edition of which will be held from 15 to 24 May 2024 at the Cineum Cannes and the Université Côte d'Azur on the Georges Méliès campus. The prize for best immersive work will be awarded during a closing ceremony on 23 May 2024.
Six non-competitive works complete this immersive selection. These explore the evolution of the medium and establish parallels between virtual reality, virtual production, cinema and collective storytelling. Among them is Clément Deneux's XR work Missing Pictures, also co-produced in Luxembourg by Wild Fang Films (Hélène Walland and Christian Neuman) together with France, the United Kingdom and Taiwan, and with the support of Film Fund Luxembourg. It forms part of the non-competitive selection at Cannes.
