The fourteenth edition of the Fundamental Monodrama Festival will take place at Banannefabrik in Luxembourg-Bonnevoie from Friday 7 to Sunday 16 June 2024.
This ten-day solo performance festival will showcase a total of seventeen shows, ten creations and one orchestra from eleven countries, including a performance by British countertenor Andrew Watts.
Following the success of The Madness of Andrew Watts at the festival last year, the classical countertenor is back with his pianist Gavin Roberts to present a specially curated programme (in English): Gods, Monsters, Fairies. This performance explores the relationship between the ethereal characters that Andrew inhabits, as well as their musical effect on him and the audience. "Heroic gods, troubled monsters and unruly fairies are all celebrated and explored in open and immersive presentation," noted the festival organisers. The programme features works by Händel, Purcell, Britten, Reimann and Neuwirth. This creation (by and with Andrew Watts) is set to be performed on Wednesday 12 June 2024 at 20:00.
One day earlier, audiences will have the opportunity to watch Medea - Red Emptiness (in Greek, with English subtitles) by Sophia Dionysopoulou and featuring Despoina Sarafeidou. The text is a lyric monologue written for an actress and performed as a poem.
Several other shows are scheduled, mainly in French but also in German, as well as local dance performances. The countries represented this year are: Luxembourg, Great Britain, Niger, Austria, France, Germany, the Republic of the Congo, Greece, Cameroon, Argentina and Morocco.
