At a press conference held at Casino Luxembourg on Friday, the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO) announced the full list of events being organised under the 19th annual "Summer in the City" programme.
From 21 June to 7 September 2015, various events will be held in the open air with the aim of enlivening the capital with culture and conviviality. The programme is designed to attract tourism to the city, as well as to create a space in which the Luxembourg population can come together.
This year, a trilingual fold-up programme and pocket guide to Summer in the City 2016 has been created in French, German and English which is available for free at the LCTO in Place Guillaume II, as well as in hotels, businesses, cultural institutions, cafes and restaurants around the capital.
Summer in the City Opening Act - Concert Knuedler goes Classic: Africa - Tuesday 21 June 2016
Fresh from winning a Grammy alongside Gast Waltzing for "Best World Music Album", Benin-born musician Angélique Kidjo will join forces once again with the Luxembourg conductor, opening the summer programme with the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. The programme will involve songs from the duo's award-winning album, "Sings".
"Plëss in Concert" - Tuesday 21 June to Wednesday 7 September 2016
Throughout the summer, around 250 open air concerts will be held at the bandstand of Place d'Armes every week to bring fanfare, harmonies, jazz groups and big bands to audiences for free in one of the city's prime locations. Monday afternoons from 12:00 will offer classical concerts and ambiant music, whilst Friday afternoons will be the turn of jazz concerts.
Events around National Day - Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 June 2016
A host of activities will unfold in Luxembourg City in celebration of the country's national day, with concerts dotted throughout the capital, a torchlit procession, fireworks and a military parade. For the full list of times and locations, click here.
OMNI Festival - Monday 11 to Saturday 23 July 2016
Punk rocker Iggy Pop is the headline act for this year's OMNI Festival. The series of concerts held at the Abbaye de Neumünster will also include a tribute concert to the British Blues by Joe Bonamassa on 12 July. For the full list of events, click here.
Guided Tours of the Casemates du Bock - Friday 15 July to Thursday 15 September 2016 : NEW!
This year, the LCTO has introduced new guided tours at fixed times to the Casemates du Bock, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which attracts more than 120,000 visitors a year. In addition to the normal entry times, guided visits will be held every day at 11:00 in German and French; 16:00 in German and English; and 19:00 in Luxembourgish and English. Guided Tours of the Grand-Ducal Palace - Saturday 16 July to Sunday 4 September 2016
Guided tours will be offered every day (apart from Wednesday) in English at 15:30 and 17:00. Visitors can explore the official headquarters of the Luxembourgish Head of State - a symbol of national independence and a testament to the influence of the Renaissance period on architecture. The residence, whose façade dates back to the XVI century, attracts over 8,000 visitors a year. Blues'n Jazz Rallye - Saturday 23 July 2016
From 19:00, the Grund and Clausen will reverberate with around 50 jazz and blues concerts taking place in 19 cafés and restaurants, as well as 8 stages, around the capital. Blues performers will include Inga & Kruminga, Lativian Blues Band, Marc Stone Band, Shakura's Aide, 24 Pesos and Johnny Clark & The Outlaws, whilst jazz highlights will include Gast Waltzing, Caro José Quartet, The Ploctones, Eliana Burki and Palo. The pedestrian zones of the city will become the stage for around 20 foreign theatre troupes, from stilt-walkers, acrobats and jugglers to dancers, comics and circus performers. Some shows will be fixed whilst others will move around the capital, with highlights including Human F)actor, Universal Druckluft Orchester, Ets Dynamogène, Foolpool and the Yelling Kitchenprince.
Guided Tour of the Exhibition "Charles IV (1316 - 1378) in the Musée d'Histoire de la Ville de Luxembourg - Sunday 4 September 2016 : NEW!
This guided tour will explore the history of Charles IV, European king and emperor (1316-1378). The tour is free but registration is compulsory at guides@lcto.lu.
