The 15th annual Fête de la Musique in the Grand Duchy will take place between 17 and 21 June 2016; more than 400 free concerts are being organised from Clervaux to Dudelange, and from Differdange to Echternach, with attendances growing each year.
Since its origins in 2001, the Fête de la Musique asbl co-ordinates and promotes the Fête de la Musique and its component parts at a national level, all the while respecting the principles of the founders of the event: the will to make this event the festival of all music, to give a platform to all musicians. and to make it all free to the public.
This year the music over the 5 days there are 24 organisations involved in the planning of the event, including municipalities, associations and public and private institutions, at over 29 locations throughout the country.
While the organisation of events is still important in the City of Luxembourg, including this year with the prestigious concert of Angélique Kidjo conducted by Gast Waltzing, featuring a programme that will be performed for the first time to the public after her Grammy Award win, other cities across the Grand Duchy are also offering very promising programmes, including: Dudelange, where its 23rd annual Music Day is a "true love story" with an eclectic program at various venues in the city (13 in total) including a new initiative dedicated to young people - and also Ettelbruck and Echternach. Organised by the Centre des Arts Pluriels Ettelbruck (CAPe) and the Northern Conservatoire, the Music Festival in Ettelbruck will present different styles of music between the CAPE, the main square and the Grand Rue. The Music Festival of Echternach in turn, ensures its leading position in the east by organising events in the tourist area with no less than 70 concerts.
Besides the cities that have managed to make a place in the programming of the Fête de la Musique, new initiatives and investments are a sign of the growing development of the event. This year will see the municipality of Putscheid organise its event entitled "The Renaissance of the Stolzembourg Castle" which will take place in this unusual place offering music and visual arts, with a performance involving the sculptor Marie-Josée Kerschen and percussionist Sven Kiefer. The Rotondes are also participating for the first time with a party of 3 concerts while, on the other side of the city, the Fonds Kirchberg is organising a musical look behind the scenes of Kirchberg where amateur musicians and professionals of the Philharmonie, the European Institutions and the Hotel Meliá will reveal the hidden face of the European district and invite the public to share in a musical and festive time.
