On Wednesday 25 March 2026, the City of Luxembourg (VdL) announced that its project allowing the sponsorship of tree beds within the city is open for participation.

The “Sponsorship of Tree Beds” project was originally launched in March 2021. According to the VdL, the main aim of sponsoring a tree bed is to ensure the maintenance of a tree bed along the street. It is primarily intended for people who do not have a private garden or balcony, as well as for those wishing to enjoy the tree bed in front of their home as an extension of their front garden.

The VdL noted that in addition to the social aspect – tree beds often encourage gardeners and passers-by to chat – the ecological dimension is of great importance in this project: not only do the streets become greener and more welcoming thanks to the floral decorations, but the various districts are also improved, quality of life is enhanced and biodiversity is promoted.

The VdL invites anyone wishing to participate in the project to contact the Parks Service of the City of Luxembourg via email: parcs@vdl.lu. Applicants are asked to specify the name of the street and the tree they wish to select. A staff member from the Parks Service will then help the prospective gardeners to find the bed that best meets the criteria and is suitable for gardening.

After consultation with the Parks Service, and depending on the location, gardeners will then be permitted to use a variety of plant species, such as summer flowers, bulbs, flower seeds or grass. In this context, the Parks Service has prepared a list of all types of flowers that may be planted in tree beds, indicating the most suitable locations.

When the tree bed is assigned, the Parks Service provides gardeners with some advice on the elements to consider when planting. For example, beds around young trees should be planted at the edges rather than directly under the tree and the soil should be filled in such a way as to not cover the base of the trunk.

The Parks Service remains available to gardeners for any advice regarding the design of the beds. However, the sponsor of a tree is responsible for purchasing the plants and materials, as well as maintaining the space.
