On Friday 8 March 2024, Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte announced the results of its call for projects “reNature – restoring biodiversity”.
This call, launched in October 2023, aimed to support actions aimed at protecting and/or improving biodiversity in Luxembourg, in a context where human activities have a harmful impact on ecosystems.
The degradation of biodiversity, resulting among other things from climate change, pollution and deforestation, is a global problem that requires urgent action. Thus, the call for projects aimed to mobilise concrete and positive initiatives in this direction in Luxembourg.
At the end of the deadline for submitting projects (10 January 2024), the Œuvre received a total of 61 requests, demonstrating a strong interest on the part of the community in the preservation of biodiversity.
The jury, composed among others of external experts, met on 26 February 2024 and carefully examined each of the applications. At its meeting of 6 March 2024, the Board of Directors of the Œuvre gave final approval to 32 projects.
The initiatives selected cover a wide range of themes: agriculture, animal and plant species, water, rivers and lakes, insects and pollinators and awareness.
A total amount of €566,772.98 was allocated to this call for projects. This excess of the initial budget of €500,000 demonstrates the Œuvre's commitment to effectively supporting these biodiversity preservation initiatives.
“We are delighted to see the enthusiasm and commitment of the community to restore and protect our precious biodiversity,” said Danièle Wagener, president of the Board of Directors of the Œuvre. “These projects demonstrate that, even with limited resources, we can have a significant impact on our environment".
The leaders of the selected projects will be contacted shortly.
The Œuvre thanked all participants for their ideas and initiatives for the environment and hopes that these projects will contribute to a more sustainable future for all.
