Luxembourg's Water Management Authority (Administration de la gestion de l'eau - AGE) has reported that a large number of dead fish were found in the Dipbech stream in Esch-sur-Alzette on Monday 10 July 2023.
Having received reports of the incident on Monday morning, the local authorities and AGE agents arrived on the scene to take water samples and remove the dead fish.
The AGE stated in a press release that high temperatures and the low water level had caused the oxygen level of the stream to drop sharply and "probably" led to the death of the fish. There was no indication of pollution at this stage.
The AGE recalled that members of the public should report such incidents to the authorities via tel.: 112 to ensure the necessary measures can be taken as soon as possible.
Update: On Wednesday 12 July 2023, the AGE confirmed that a discharge of wastewater from a pipe belonging to the City of Esch-sur-Alzette was the cause of the lack of oxygen in the stream, which ultimately caused the death of the fish. This was determined following an investigation by AGE agents. Local authorities were able to stop the spill and AGE and CGDIS agents installed pumps to increase the oxygen content in the watercourse.
