Between Monday 21 and Friday 25 March 2022, Luxembourg's Environmental Agency, together with customs, carried out several checks on the transport of waste to the French border as part of the “clean territories” measure.

Over three days period, a total of 83 trucks and vans transporting waste were checked on the A3 near Dudelange Zoufftgen. A total of 28 offences, like absence of documents, incomplete documents, absence of authorisations, etc. were recorded and sanctioned.

During these checks, the agents first checked the necessary authorisations and documents provided for by European law (Parliamentary Regulation (EC) No 1013/2006) in the event of cross-border transport of waste.

Controls are carried out according to the national inspection plan on the basis of European provisions concerning waste shipments.

These checks allow:

  • to prevent and detect illegal transport of waste,
  • safe and efficient management of hazardous waste, for which transport must be limited,
  • optimisation of waste treatment processes.

As part of the checks, the agents can check the documents, the identity of the people and the nature of the waste transported.
