In the run-up to International Day of Forests 2022, celebrated on 21 March, the Nature and Forest Agency of Luxembourg's Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Sustainable Development and the forest service of the City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) organised various activities aimed at showing the different ways to promote local wood.
In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March as the International Day of Forests. Since then, various countries have been invited each year to organise activities around a specific theme with the aim of raising public awareness of the multifunctional aspects of forests. The chosen theme for 2022 is "forests and sustainable production and consumption".
In Luxembourg, action has been taken to create and maintain forests that will be more resilient to climate change, supported by financial aid such as the "Klimabonusbësch" subsidy, the "Naturpakt" (nature pact) and new forest aid for municipalities and private owners, all aimed at improving forest biological diversity and carbon storage.
The activities organised within the framework of the International Day of Forests 2022 in Luxembourg aimed to show the different ways of promoting local wood. The southern district of the Nature and Forest Agency presented sustainable forest management techniques to build diverse forests that are resilient to climate change. Moreover, the VdL forest service presented the various products resulting from the sustainable management of its forests and gave a demonstration of the operation of a mobile sawmill.
