On Tuesday 30 June 2026, Luxembourg’s statistics institute, STATEC, published the results of a survey which revealed that nearly one in two young people in the Grand Duchy experience stress linked to social media.
According to the study, by 2025, 32% of internet users reported experiencing stress related to social media. Stress levels reach 45% among sixteen to 24 year olds and 49% among 25 to 34 year olds, before decreasing sharply after age 35. Men and women are affected in roughly equal proportions.
STATEC reported that the study also revealed 48% of internet users reported having been exposed to hostile or degrading online content, with the sixteen to 24 and 25 to 34 age groups being the most exposed, with rates reaching 60%. This equates to more than one in two young people being exposed to hostile online content.
STATEC listed the five most frequently cited reasons for online attacks as being:
⁃ 71% because of their political or social opinions
⁃ 58% because of their racial or ethnic origin
⁃ 50% because of their religion or beliefs
⁃ 50% because of their sexual orientation or gender identity (LGBTIQ+)
⁃ 35% because of their sex
