Within in the context of European Mobility Week in September and the climate pact currently taking place, Klima-Bündnis Lëtzebuerg and Verkéiersverbond revived the 'Tour du Duerf' project with a view to raising awareness amongst citizens, communal board members and advisory committees of various municiaplities on the economically and ecologically friendly capacity of bicycles.
The initative encouraged these individuals to use bicycles daily and collect as many kilometers as possible, with the City of Luxembourg joining in in favour of promoting soft mobility to the benefit of the environment. The 13 registered teams of the City gained a combined total of 9,545 km, eliminating 1,374 kg of CO2 emissions. The project came to an end on 7 October 2015, following which the City rewarded the three individuals who had recorded the most kilometres and therefore repsented the three best teams registered within the territory of the capital.
The ceremony was held on Wednesday 9 December 2015, during which the College of the Mayor and Aldermen handed vouchers for a bicycle shop with a value of €300, €200 and €100 to Mike Mathias (1,096 km), Frank Haag (738 km) and Jean-Luc Linster (585 km), respectively. Participants of the three best teams, meanwhile, each received a copy of the comic 'Vum Siggy bis bei d'City', tracing a playful history of Luxembourg City.
With 3,353 km and a total saving of 482.8 kg in CO2 emissions, the 'Déi Greng' team, comprised of 12 cyclists, topped the ranking, followed by the 'Mobiliteit - VdL' group, with 17 participants, 2,005 km and 288.7 kg of CO2 saved; and 'd'Meedercher an d'Jongen vum Haff' with 5 people, 1,477 km and 212.7 less kg of CO2.
The City of Luxembourg urged the participants and the residents of the capital to keep the momentum going and continue using bicycles in their travels across the city and further afield.
