The energy department of the Luxembourg Institute for Regulation (ILR) has published key figures for the electricity and natural gas markets in July.

These figures particularly revealed that 1,000 customers changed electricity supplier in 2019. National electricity production is also increasing and comes mainly from renewable energy sources.

The supplier change rate for 2019 was 1.9% in terms of volume and 0.3% in terms of number of customers. In 2019, the country's total consumption decreased slightly compared to 2018, recording a total consumption of 6,555 GWh (gigawatt hours). The national peak was however on the rise and stood at 1,103 MW (megawatts) in 2019, compared to 1,085 MW in 2018. The report also indicated that 15.9% of the electricity consumed in the Grand Duchy was produced in Luxembourg. National net production reached a total of 1,043 GWh in 2019 and thus exceeded the 1,000 GWh mark. Similarly, 12.2% of national consumption came from national production based on renewable energy sources, which represents 77% of national production.

The ILR also noted that production based on renewable energy sources increased 16.5%, from 688 GWh in 2018 to 802 GWh in 2019. This increase is explained by last year's increase in wind production (up 27 GWh), photovoltaic production (up 12 GWh), electric production based on biomass (up 65 GWh) as well as hydroelectric production (up14 GWh).

Concerning the natural gas market, the report revealed that the national annual consumption, like the maximum hourly capacity, was slightly lower compared to 2018; the national consumption went from 8,898 GWh in 2018 to 8,880 GWh in 2019, while the peak of the network increased from 220,028 Nm3 / h (normal metre cubed per hour) in 2018 to 210,331 Nm3 / h in 2019. On the other hand, the number of natural gas supplier changes has increased: in 2019, 295 consumers changed supplier. This can be explained in particular by the arrival of a new supplier at the end of 2018.
