The Sunflower Crèche in Moutfort commended the achievement of 50 children who succeeded in reading 12 different types of books or articles over the summer holidays, by hosting a celebratory party over the weekend.
The party was held on Saturday 26 September 2015 by bookshop Little English Bookworm, whose member Ophelia Gartside set the challenge at the start of the holidays with a view to encouraging children to read and engage in a range of reading materials.
The challenge was opened to all children residing in Luxembourg, but with the specification that the material had to be read in English, with the twelve book categories including History, Sports, Outdoors, Poetry and Comedy. 86 children overall participated in the challenge, with 50 receiving a congratulatory letter each from The Honourable Alice Walpole, British Ambassador to Luxembourg, as well as a prize for their efforts.
The Summer Reading Challenge was celebrated with a party hosted by Sunflower Crèche, featuring giant outdoor games, a scrumptious cake and a book voucher for every child completing the challenge.
The Crèche also judged the photo competition for Best Reading Location and Most Exotic Reading Location, with the prizes presented by HM British Government representative Natalie Gowers. In addition, Little English Bokworm donated €350 to the Ilula Orphan Program Luxembourg-Tanzania for books for the new Primary School, giving the Luxembourg children an even greater reason to be proud of their achievement. IOP-LUX creates concrete and sustainable educational programmes for vulnerable, abandoned and orphaned children.
Managing Director of Sunflower, Sam O'Dea, said of the event: "Myself and Helen were delighted to support this initiative. How wonderful in this age of screens and virtual books to see the great response to this challenge. It is so important to instill a love of books from an early age. It was especially nice to see so many past Saturday school students taking part".
