Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has announced that seventeen student teams will be competing in the regional final of the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competition, which is taking place at Lycée Aline Mayrisch in Luxembourg-Merl on Saturday 23 April 2022.

The FLL is a global challenge organised by the US-based non-profit organisation For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) and the LEGO Group. It offers teams of young participants an opportunity to solve problems encountered in a given scientific field using a professional approach: research, discussion, drawing, construction and testing.

For the 2021-22 season, the theme is "Cargo Connect". Since the start of the school year, young people aged nine to fifteen have reflected on this theme by working on a research file. At the same time, they produced and programmed a LEGO Mindstorms / LEGO Spike robot made of "intelligent" LEGO bricks (equipped with sensors and automation), capable of carrying out a series of tests in a limited time. This experience is in line with the Education Ministry's desire to teach coding as a basic skill as early as primary school.

After several weeks of preparation, seventeen Luxembourg teams, made up of four to ten pupils and their coaches, from cycle 4 (5th and 6th years) of primary education and the lower classes of secondary education, are ready to compete in the following categories: robot game, design and programming, research project and team spirit.

The top two teams will qualify for the Benelux league final which will take place in Rotterdam in the Netherlands on 21 May 2022.

The event is organised in Luxembourg by the Department for the Coordination of Educational and Technological Research and Innovation (SCRIPT), in collaboration with Lycée Aline Mayrisch. The competition is open to spectators and entry is free.
