Luxembourg's Minister of Finance, Pierre Gramegna, has called for a common European Union (EU) approach to the economic consequences of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In a Eurogroup extraordinary conference call on Wednesday, EU finance ministers discussed the economic consequences of the spread of coronavirus in Europe.

On this occasion, Luxembourg's Finance Minister stressed the need for the EU "to act together and show its solidarity" in light of coronavirus. He continued: "It is necessary to take common, strong and decisive measures to protect our economies and to counteract the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 virus".

Finance ministers agreed during the conference call that permanent "monitoring" of economic and financial developments must be ensured, with a view to the next meeting of the Eurogroup, which will take place on 16 March 2020 in Brussels. The ministers also reaffirmed their firm will to act in a consistent and proportional manner in the coming weeks.
