Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy and the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works have confirmed that the sixth edition of the "Vëlosummer" cycling initiative will take place across the Grand Duchy from Saturday 19 July to Sunday 24 August 2025.

At a press conference that took place on Thursday 12 June 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister of Defence, Minister of Mobility and Public Works and Minister of Gender Equality and Diversity, Yuriko Backes, and Minister Delegate for Tourism, Eric Thill, announced the summer cycling event that invites residents and tourists to (re)discover Luxembourg by bike.

According to the ministries, the 2025 edition of Vëlosummer is fully in line with the government's strategy to promote soft mobility and sustainable, local tourism. Through a network of marked routes, this initiative will showcase the country's landscapes, heritage and regions in settings accessible to all.

Building on the success of 2024, which welcomed more than 31,000 participants, Vëlosummer 2025 will offer fourteen routes spread across the country. In collaboration with 59 municipalities, several road sections will be temporarily closed to traffic to provide a pleasant and safe cycling experience. Some routes will be accessible on weekends only, while others will be accessible for the entire duration of the event.

The routes will cross Luxembourg's most iconic regions: the wooded hills of Éislek; the spectacular rock formations of Mëllerdall; the terraced vineyards of the Moselle; the peaceful shores of Lake Haute-Sûre; the picturesque castles of Guttland; and the Minett, with its rich industrial heritage and contrasting landscapes. Along each route, cyclists will have the opportunity to discover numerous tourist sites and local attractions.

Minister Thill said: "Vëlosummer perfectly illustrates our ambition for sustainable, active and high-quality tourism. The event strengthens the attractiveness of our regions and offers a friendly and respectful way to discover Luxembourg's treasures."

Minister Backes added: "I am delighted with the launch of the sixth edition of Vëlosummer. This initiative demonstrates our shared commitment to promoting soft mobility and improving the living environment of citizens. It offers a unique opportunity to discover cycling, both for leisure and as a means of daily transportation.”

The ministries also announced that the "Vëlosummer Challenge" will return for this edition of the event and will be available on the VisitLuxembourg app. Those who complete the fourteen routes and answer the thematic quizzes will have the chance to win the symbolic yellow jersey for the 2025 edition.

To help the public plan their itineraries, an illustrated map listing all the routes has been developed. It is available at www.velosummer.lu, along with practical information and downloadable resources. Bike rental services are also available along many routes. Reservations can be made at www.visitluxembourg.com/bike-rentals or through designated partner providers.

The ministries advise that during the cycling initiative, sections of road will be closed to traffic but will remain accessible to residents, public transportation and emergency services. All routes will be clearly marked on the ground to ensure easy and safe navigation.

During the press conference, Minister Backes presented the next phases of development of the national cycling network, aimed at optimising existing infrastructure and gradually expanding the network to promote daily cycling. The minister also announced the launch and commissioning of several cycling infrastructure construction projects, scheduled for 2025 and 2026.
