Earlier this month, on 5 June 2020, Luxembourg's Minister of Tourism, Lex Delles, and Minister of Mobility and Public Works, François Bausch, proposed temporarily making sixteen road sections accessible exclusively to cyclists, residents and RGTR buses as part of the Vëlosummer 2020 initiative.

Following two weeks of consultations between the municipalities concerned and the aforementioned ministries, the following sections have been confirmed and will complement the some 1,000 kilometres of existing national and regional cycle routes this August:

  • Pontpierre-Leudelange, from 1 to 31 August: this section gives a taste of the "Vëloexpresswee" between Esch-sur-Alzette and Luxembourg;
  • Alzingen-Syren, Syren-Moutfort and Obersyren-Mensdorf, from 1 to 31 August: these sections connect the City of Luxembourg to the Syre valley, before reaching the Moselle in Remich, Wormeldange or Mertert;
  • Mondorf-Ellange, from 1 to 31 August: this section connects Mondorf at the level of Ellange to the PC7 towards Remich and to the PC11 towards the City of Luxembourg;
  • Mamer-Kopstal, from 1 to 31 August and Kopstal-Schoenfels every Saturday and Sunday in August: on weekends, this section allows a triangular course of some 40 km connecting Luxembourg City to Gosseldange via the PC15 of the Alzette valley, then Gosseldange at the Lycée de Mamer via roads closed to traffic at Schoenfels and Kopstal in the Mamer valley, to return to the City by the PC13 which crosses Bertrange and Strassen. A variant route through the municipality of Kehlen is being developed;
  • Bridge spanning the railway between Dommeldange and Beggen, from 1 to 31 August: the prohibition of individual motorised traffic in transit secures this link between the City of Luxembourg and Mersch;
  • Sandweiler-American cemetery: this section, which includes facilities for cyclists on the “Scheedhaff” crossroads, foreshadows a cycle route being planned and links Sandweiler to the eastern districts of Luxembourg City as well as the PC1 in the Alzette valley;
  • Goedange-Weiswampach-Clervaux-Enscherange, only on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August: this 27 km section, which is served by several CFL stations, allows to reach Lake Weiswampach and Clervaux from the north via the "Vennbahn" and from the south via Wilwerwiltz, Kautenbach or Parc Hosingen.

Detailed maps with itinerary proposals, highlighting Horeca companies and tourist points of interest will be developed and published by the General Directorate of Tourism of the Ministry of Economy.

The respective ministries have recalled that the road sections in question will not be completely free of motorised traffic and that all road users will be required to comply with the Highway Code.
