On Thursday 3 March 2022, the law of 25 February 2022 relating to cultural heritage of Luxembourg has entered into force.

The law provides a unique legal framework for the cultural heritage of Luxembourg, by introducing provisions targeting both architectural and archaeological heritage and movable and intangible heritage. In an effort to raise awareness, Luxembourg's Minister of Culture, Sam Tanson, invited the citizens and municipal representatives of Luxembourg to four information and exchange meetings across the country, the first of which took place on Wednesday 2 March 2022, in the Artikuss performance hall, in the presence of Simone Asselborn-Bintz, Mayor of Sanem, Patrick Sanavia, Director of the National Institute for Architectural Heritage, Foni Le Brun-Ricalens, Director of the National Institute for Archaeological Research, and by Beryl Bruck, Head of the Cultural Heritage Department at the Ministry of Culture.

In addition to the fact that the new law implements international and European texts and that it modernises the rules relating to cultural heritage, Minister Tanson underlined the societal aspects that it involves: "This law guarantees the conservation, protection and value of our collective memory. It allows us to offer future generations continuity, a sense of belonging and identity, rooted in history. By committing ourselves today to the protection of our cultural heritage, we are not investing in the past, but in our future”.

The information and discussion meeting resulted in the presentation of a practical guide on the new law on cultural heritage. Aimed at concerned or interested citizens, this guide aims to explain and visually present the main issues and procedures related to the protection of the various aspects of cultural heritage. Published by the Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the heritage services concerned, the guide is available online at patrimoineculturel.public.lu

In the following weeks, three additional public information and exchange meetings will take place:

  • for the East region, on 14 March 2022 at 19:00 in the village hall of the Maacher Lycée in Grevenmacher,
  • for the North region, on 15 March 2022 at 19:00 at the Plural Arts Center (CAPE) in Ettelbruck,
