Handicap International has announced that it is organising the 17th edition of its Shoe Pyramid on Saturday 1 October 2016 from 10:00 - 17:00 at the Place d'Armes in Luxembourg city.
The initiative is aimed at raising awareness of the use of explosive weapons in densely populated areas, which puts civilian lives at risk in an unacceptable manner.
Handicap International has been fighting for years against the use of such despicable weapons hitting civilians indiscriminately: landmines, cluster munitions and explosive remnants of war. The use of explosive weapons in populated areas is becoming a standard in contemporary conflicts; a violation of international humanitarian law. According to Handicap International, "It is time to stop the killing!"
This new edition of the Shoe Pyramid event offers members of the public to express their support for victims by depositing their shoes, a strong symbolic gesture and a clear message that will help stop the massacre of thousands of innocent civilians around the world.
Throughout the day, Handicap International will welcome the public through various events: An awareness course with 360 immersion in a Syrian town destroyed by bombing, exposure, mobilisation workshop and a "Restes de guerres" choreographic performance created by Bernard Baumgarten, meeting with members of Handicap International, and many opportunities to educate visitors and allow them to better measure the reality of a situation that remains tragic for many civilians.
