On Wednesday 11 December 2024, the second edition of the Data Summit Luxembourg event, organised by the Luxembourg National Data Service (LNDS), took place at the European Convention Center in Luxembourg-Kirchberg.

The event was dedicated to exploiting the potential of public sector data to create value. It focused on the theme of innovation and the possibilities of secondary use of data, bringing together around 500 local and international participants, described as experts in the field of data sharing and analysis.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Digitalisation and the Ministry for Research and Higher Education, the reliable and secure reuse of data will contribute to innovation and help develop a sustainable and trustworthy economy.

Luxembourg's Minister of Digitalisation and Minister of Research and Higher Education, Stéphanie Obertin, gave the opening speech in which the implementation of the national data strategy was the central topic. She stressed that its implementation represented a great opportunity and will enable Luxembourg to become a destination of choice for companies wishing to maximise the potential of their data, saying: "We are developing a strategy that reflects our strengths, addresses our challenges and assumes our role as a small but ambitious nation in a data-driven world."

The statement also added that by offering advanced processing capabilities and fostering a regulatory environment conducive to innovation, Luxembourg will create, in the short term, an ecosystem where data-driven activities can thrive.

The minister concluded that by laying the foundations for smartly connected, contextualised, rapidly available and secure data, Luxembourg aims to position itself in the short term as one of the European leaders in the field of data.

Luxembourg's Minister Delegate to the Prime Minister for Media and Connectivity, Elisabeth Margue, also addressed the event. During her speech, the minister focused on the national strategies for artificial intelligence (AI), data and quantum technologies which are currently being developed by the government.

According to Minister Margue: "Luxembourg's size and its existing digital infrastructure constitute structural assets that will contribute to coordinated, government-wide efforts in AI, data and quantum technologies. These assets will make it possible to progress and experiment with solutions faster than larger nations. Our goal is not simply to be first, but to deliver tangible benefits to our citizens and businesses as quickly as possible. In 2023, our shared vision was to develop three integrated strategies to prepare the country by 2030. We are currently in the final phase of this project and plan to unveil them in spring 2025."

The third edition of Data Summit Luxembourg will take place on Tuesday 2 December 2025 at the European Convention Center Luxembourg (ECCL).
