On Friday 6 December 2024, the Association of Positive Psychology Luxembourg (PPL), will host a talk, "Mattering and Why It Matters”, from 18:30 until 20:00 at the Oekozenter in Luxembourg-Pfaffenthal.

The guest speaker and facilitator for the interactive event will be Experimental Psychologist Dr Evie Rosset, PhD., who teaches Positive Psychology at Anglia
Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK.

PPL reported that the talk will discuss the profound psychological need to feel useful and valued. It will challenge common well-being narratives questioning how the popular oxygen mask metaphor may lead us astray, and why the idea of “balancing” self-care and other care can be misleading. Note that  the oxygen mask metaphor refers to putting  oneself first- if someone runs out of oxygen, they cannot help anyone else put on their oxygen mask. It is described as being an important metaphor for those who spend a great deal of their time taking care of others.

The aim of the talk is for participants to leave with a fresh perspective on well-being, with practical tools for integrating mattering into their lives and with a re-imagined understanding of what it means to live fully. Whether in personal or professional spheres, the talk invites attendees to rethink well-being and embrace a life enriched through connection and contribution.

After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to network with PPL members and positive psychology experts. Refreshments will be served.

PPL President Dana Moldoveanu Brandes said: “We are delighted to welcome Dr Rosset to Luxembourg to present such a fascinating talk to our PPL members and guests”. She added: “Along with a few other members of PPL, I had the pleasure of being taught by Dr Rosset during my MSc in Applied Positive Psychology, and our attendees are in for a treat!

Admission is free for PPL members. Tickets for non-members cost €25 and are available at: https://my.weezevent.com/mattering-and-why-it-matters.
