The Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) has invited Professor Peter McCullagh, Professor at the Department of Statistics of the University of Chicago, to speak at the CHL Amphitheatre from 17:00 until 19:00 on Wednesday 6 April 2016.

Professor McCullagh is currently visiting Oxford University as Eastman Professor and is a Fellow of the Royal Society as well as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

A study published in 1943 by Fisher, Corbet and Williams concerned the relation between the number of species and the number of specimens in random samples.

“In this talk, I will explain how Fisher’s log-series distribution is a consequence of three mathematical axioms: exchangeability, consistency and self-similarity. If time permits, I will discuss the implications for empirical studies of a similar sort, including Fairfield-Smith’s work on the variance of spatial averages,” Professor Peter McCullagh wrote on the lecture.

The event will be hosted by the Luxembourg Statistical Society.
