On Thursday 17 March 2016, a conference-debate entitled 'Femmes réfugiés, un chemin semé des embûches et d'espoir' ('Refugee Women, a Path Strewn with Pitfalls and Hope') will be held.
Women and girls fleeing war and conflict in their home countries face various forms of gender-based violence, as well as multiple forms of widespread discrimination against female refugees and asylum seekers. As a recent report by Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) Luxembourg showed, conflict makes women particularly vulnerable and a cross-sectorial in-depth analysis is therefore required to combat the conditions creating this precarity.
Christoph Schroeder, Head of the Information Office of the European Parliament, and Janine Reuland-Schneider, President of the National Council of Women of Luxembourg (CNFL), will offer opening remarks before a speech by Corinne Cahen, Luxembourg Minister for the Family and Integration and the Greater Region.
Academics will speak on their field of expertise, including Professor of Psychology of the University of Cairo, Kholoud Saber, who will highlight the particularity of violence against Arab women, the psychological consequences on female refugees and possible means for intervention; Professor of Sociology of the University of Strasbourg, Smaïn Laacher, who will point to the violence against migrant women during their displacement; and European Deputy, Mady Delvaux, who will offer an examination of the situation of female refugees and asylum seekers in the EU and the stance of the European Parliament. The event will also feature eyewitness accounts from Iraqi journalist Ennas Alasharifi and Syrian refugee Zina Menhaz, and will be moderated by ASTI president Laura Zuccoli.
The conference will take place from 18:30 to 20:30 at the Alen Tramsschapp, 49 rue Ermesinde, L-1469 Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.
