The Croix-Rouge Luxembourgeoise reported yesterday that it has been able to strengthen its support of refugees arriving in the Grand Duchy and further afield thanks to the significant amount of material donations and number of volunteers offered from the Luxembourg population.

"Thank you to the many volunteers who wish to assist migrants," said Deputy General Manager of the Red Cross, Marc Crochet. "We can see people willing to help the mobilise them in the coming days, weeks and months."

The Red Cross works with national authorities and the Agence du Bénévolat, as well as other aid organisations such as Caritas, to guide those wishing to donate time or items to the effort. The amount of volunteers contributed has reportedly been equalled by the generosity of material items in recent weeks.

"The amount of clothes we have received has doubled in the last few days," continued Marc Crochet. "We received a large amount of women's clothing and toys in recent days, but we still lack for example underwear and other necessities. For this reason, financial donations are also very important in this situation".

Donations allow the Red Cross to increase its actions abroad, with "€600 allow[ing] for example the provision of a single family tent to refugees in Turkey where we support the action of the Turkish Croissant-Rouge for the 300,000 people who have been accommodated in camps near the Syrian border."

The Luxembourg Red Cross also supports sister-organisations in Macedonia and Serbia to come to the rescue of refugees in transit in the Near East.

Back home, the Luxembourg Red Cross manages the initial reception centre for refugees from Lily Unden and five other accommodation facilities. in 2014, nearly 2,000 people were housed by the service.

Those wishing to donate financially to the Luxembourg Red Cross in its national and international projects, which includes accommodation and support for refugees in Turkey, Niger, Mali, Ukraine, Serbia and Macedonia, can do so by:
