On Saturday 4 July, Independence Day in the U.S. was celebrated in Luxembourg, with the event being co-hosted by the American Women’s Club of Luxembourg (AWCL) and Democrats Abroad Luxembourg (DAL).
The celebration was held in the terrace and garden of the youth hostel in Luxembourg-Pfaffenthal which had been decorated with red, white, and blue crepe paper streamers and American flags welcoming the large group who attended.
The celebration had a laid-back atmosphere. Friends and families relaxed and talked for hours. Everyone at the celebration enjoyed typical American food, including hamburgers, pasta salad and cupcakes.
Vidushi, a student at the American school, said that “America is really festive,” and that the 4th of July party was how she expected it to be.
“I came with my family and enjoyed the event, and all of the feelings that come with it. I wanted to see what it feels like to celebrate the 4th of July with Americans,” said Alexander, an Italian man married to an American woman and father of two. He and his sons — and many of the children at the event — got their faces painted at the party.
Tina Pace, an AWCL member, said that she enjoyed the event “Because I have kids — my daughter has been here half of her life and my son was born here. I feel like they’re missing out. I want them to be exposed to American events and patriotism, and at least a little bit of their American culture.”
The primary organisers were AWCL Vice Presidents Giny Behrend and Andrea Fiebelkorn, and DAL Chair Will Bakker.
