The Luxembourg Red Cross has launched its “Mois du Dons” (Donation Month) 2023, which will mobilise more than 2,000 volunteers throughout Luxembourg between 1 and 30 April 2023.

The successive crises in recent years have severely affected the most vulnerable. According to the Luxembourg Red Cross, there are many challenges that need to be addressed, such as housing, youth issues and humanitarian crises. These require a collective effort and the Donation Month initiative is an opportunity to help.

Throughout this month, volunteers will meet locals to introduce them to the Luxembourg Red Cross and to collect donations; online donations are also possible via https://www.moisdudon.lu/. The funds received will be used to support various actions on the ground that will benefit the most vulnerable members of society.

Luc Scheer, member of the Management Committee of the Luxembourg Red Cross, said: “The past few years have been intense for everyone… but especially for the most vulnerable. Volunteers and employees of the Red Cross are committed on a daily basis to enable young people to invent their future, the most disadvantaged to have a roof over their heads. We are also present with refugees, no matter where they come from and wherever they are. And all of this we could not do without the support of our many donors. They give us the means for our action.”

Donation Month is a highlight of the year for volunteers: they can explain to their neighbours and friends how to help and support those who need it most. For Barbara Pels, volunteer of the local section of Luxembourg City, “this commitment is natural, but also necessary. I am lucky to be able to invest my time to help those who really need it. It's not just about the difficult ends of the month, it's about succeeding in remaining dignified when one has to face an accident in life that threatens one’s ability to find housing or to remain within one’s family. And, in a way, we are all concerned: who knows what tomorrow will bring?

This year, a multimedia campaign will reinforce the mobilisation of volunteers. It will highlight the "super donors", namely all those who, through their donation (whatever the amount), allow the Red Cross to help vulnerable people. The idea is to show that donating is a commitment that makes a difference and has a direct impact on those in need.

Faced with these increasing challenges, Luxembourgers have responded by supporting the Red Cross and its various actions.  “There is suffering in Luxembourg, Ukraine, Turkey and Syria. Everywhere, we are committing resources and we can commit them quickly thanks to the generosity of Luxembourg residents. Unfortunately, the difficulties are not diminishing and the support of everyone is as important – if not more – today than yesterday,” concluded Luc Scheer.
