Fondation Cancer has confirmed that 2,027 students took part in the digital edition of its "Mission Nichtrauchen" anti-smoking competition in Luxembourg.

The goal of this competition is to encourage young people not to smoke. Organised for the past 22 years by Fondation Cancer, the competition had to be revamped this year in view of the health situation.

Every year, 1,000 people die from smoking in Luxembourg. With many people starting to smoke around the age of 13-14, school is considered a particularly suitable place for prevention measures. This is where the Mission Nichtrauchen competition comes in.

For this digital edition, school classes were invited to complete an online quiz every month to assess their knowledge on various smoking-related topics. A total of 2,027 students tested their knowledge in this year's competition. The winners managed to accumulate the most points in the six quizzes, with a draw breaking the tie.

The 2021 finalists were:

- 1st prize (€1,000): class 5CCL2 from Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer (teacher: Ms Dominique Schmit)

- 2nd prize (€500): class 7C6 from Lycée Ermesinde (teacher: Ms Justine Godziewski)

- 3rd prize (€250): class LNBD 6G5 from Lycée Nic-Biever (teacher: Ms Martine Linden) tied with class 6C3 from Lycée Josy Barthel Mamer (teacher: Ms Dominique Schmit)

Over the past 22 years, a total of 2,963 classes with 59,717 students have participated in the Mission Nichtrauchen competition.

Lucienne Thommes, a doctor and the Director of Fondation Cancer, commented: “In these difficult times, prevention has remained a priority for teachers and with more than 2,000 participating students, we are delighted with the success we have had. With this competition, we want to make young people aware of the harmful effects of smoking and encourage them to say no to cigarettes".
