Luxembourg-based NGO SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde has launched an appeal for donations for its projects in Nepal in light of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and five years on from the Nepal earthquake.
Nepal, like the rest of the world, has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, both in terms of public health and the economy. In addition to around 30 confirmed cases of the virus, the country's entire tourism sector is under threat.
Since March, at the height of the tourist season, the country has been closed to tourists and mountaineers, leaving hundreds of mountain workers without their only livelihoods. This represents another blow for this country which remains fragile after being devastated by a powerful earthquake (7.8 magnitude) in April 2015. The earthquake resulted in the deaths of 8,900 people and injured more than 22,000 people.
In Luxembourg, thanks to its donors, SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde was involved (up until last year) in supporting the response of its sister association SOS Children's Villages Nepal. The Luxembourg NGO also organised, in 2017, a Nepal Challenge which enabled the provision of medical and computer equipment to two SOS Children's Villages (Kavre, Jorpati) and supported the reconstruction of a community school for 640 students in Bhimtar.
Anyone wishing to support the projects of SOS Villages d'Enfants Monde can do so by making a donation via bank transfer to the account CCPL IBAN LU65 1111 0050 0053 0000 or online at www.sosve.lu.
