The care home Parc du 3ème âge has offered free hats and scarves to the non-profit organisation Stëmm vun der Strooss to keep Luxembourg's homeless warm this winter.

On Monday 8 October 2018, residents of the Parc du 3ème âge, located in Bertrange, donated hats and scarves to Stëmm vun der Strooss. The clothing items, which will be given to homeless people in the Grand Duchy, are the result of bi-weekly knitting workshops at the nursing home.

The knitting classes last just two hours so as not to exhaust the participants, many of whom have physical or mental disabilities, such as haemiphlegia or Alzheimer's disease. The knitting workshop thus fulfills several functions: it enhances the lives of residents who feel useful again and offers them the opportunity to give back a little of the care they receive daily  by helping people in need through their work. In addition, activities like knitting are a great exercise for controlling and maintaining the motor skills of those who can still use both hands. For those who are haemiplegic for example, there is another method of knitting that consists of passing the woolen threads around points on a tablet. It is a more suitable method because it is possible to do using only one hand.

It should be noted that knitting a scarf takes one month or 16 hours of work for these elderly people who are driven by their desire to help.
