Caritas Luxembourg has launched emergency aid for victims of the recent Indonesian earthquake and tsunami.

The natural disaster that struck Indonesia last Friday has left at least 830 people dead, more than 500 wounded and many people are still missing. Rescue teams and families continue to desperately search between the rubble of the survivors' homes. Moreover, the touristic coastal city of Palu has been particularly affected and, since an alert was not given, most people could not get away.

Caritas Luxembourg has reacted by providing local partners with resources. Relief and emergency help, however, are very complicated because the telephone network no longer works and roads are difficult to pass. A Caritas Manado team is on site in the affected territories to assess the needs of survivors and coordinate aid, in consultation with the authorities. For the time being, people need food, care and shelter, such as tents.

To help as many people as possible, through its local partners, Caritas Luxembourg is encouraging the mobilisation of the Luxembourg population. Those wishing to help victims in Indonesia through donations may do so by transfer to the account CCPL IBAN LU34 1111 0000 2020 0000, mentioning "Earthquake Indonesia", or via the website www.caritas.lu.
