The 10th annual ING Marathon in Luxembourg was held on Saturday in cool but dry conditions, with Kenyan runners taking the top honours in both the men's and women's full distance competitions; a total of 11,000 people participated.
The winner of the men's race, Kenya's John Komen stated afterwards "A great race - I'm just happy". He narrowly failed to beat the course record set by his compatriot Bellor Yator in 2012. He added "Although I have not broken the record, I will be at the start next year". Pierre Weimerskirch, the top Luxembourg finisher in 7th place overall, stated "The conditions were perfect, the atmosphere in a great city - one is carried by the crowd. My goal was to run under 2:40 - and now I am also the best in Luxembourg! A perfect race for me".
In the women's race, Kenyan Naomi Tuei set a new course record; she exclaimed "Crossing the finish line, I was completely exhausted, because the course is really difficult . But I ran my best time. Today is probably the best day of my career!". Karin Schank, the top Luxembourger to finish, stated "I almost gave up at km 25 because I felt an old injury in my right leg. But the tide turned in my favour and I could continue. The course is certainly demanding, but it suits me. I'll be waiting next year if my body wants it!".
Luc Verbeken, CEO of ING Luxembourg, which will also be title sponsor next year, said after the race "The atmosphere here in Luxembourg is unbeatable. Congratulations to the organisational team around Erich Francis, who, once again, did a great job!"
The date of the 11th Night Marathon ING Luxembourg has been set at 28 May 2016.
